PLAYING GREAT DEFENCE WORKS!

“The most important rule is to play great defense, not great offense. Every day I assume every position I have is wrong. I know where my stop risk points are going to be. I do that so I can define my maximum drawdown. Hopefully, I spend the rest of the day enjoying positions that are going in my direction.”

– Paul Tudor Jones

“ The essence of Investment management is management of risks, not the management of returns”

–  Benjamin Graham

After reading these lines, I thought of seeing whether this statement applies to cricket… and to my surprise, this does apply to cricket as much as to the stock markets. A great defensive player, Rahul Dravid has got better batting average compared to a great aggressive player, Virender Sehwag… And Dravid had a longer career due to his consistency. Both have been top order batsmen and both have played at similar points in time. These are the ODI stats:

Usual mindset assumes – more aggression ensues more success In Reality – Great Defense ensures you are in the game for more time which will automatically move the success probability in your favor.
